We join Wesley, Dahr, Melantha and Menolim on a busy evening at Landers, the room is bustling with the recently landed sailors and the dock workers unwinding after the days labour. The sounds of dicing cards and merriment fill the room with the four going about their duties to help out the other employee's. The night was going smoothly what with Melantha and Menolim helping take the load off of Ashi and Risette that evening and everything was pleasant until a commotion started by the corner dice table.
"That's the fifth set of sixes in the past half an hour, the bloody hell is going on with you. You haven't lost a hand all night" comes a shout from a brown haired sailor standing up. Wesley in his usual haunt by the gaming tables was quick to intervene and grasp the situation asking a stammering man to turn out his pockets. The man making to leave was kept from doing so by Dahr in his post by the door. Refusing to turn out both of his pockets, Wesleys quick fingers find a set of oddly weighty dice in the mans pocket. The patron, being tended to by Melantha, shouted in vindication "I knew it you bastard."
Dahr was quick to demand the man returned the money he had won before letting him leave and after he stubbornly threw the money to the ground he made a point of asking the man to apologize before leaving. He tried to shove past not wanting to swallow his pride but Dahr unmoving made it clear that this was the easy way. With the eyes of others now on him, a rushed apology later he made for the door and hurried off at speed. The man reunited with the money returned to playing his dice and the room deprived of their entertainment returned to general chatter.
The night continued cleanly with patrons starting to disappear, with the usual girls come in to find a sailor freshly landed with pay. As Melantha strode between tables dealing with the small requests of the customers she spotted a pair of women, engaged in a discussion with some men, she did not recognize. Making moves to hand nearby she quickly heard the nature of their dealings and discreetly attempted to inform the women of the arrangements of the place. After a quick discussion an arrangement was made and the women paid the fee to work the room for the week. No trouble caused.
As the room emptied for the night as the staff made their ways to leave, Landers himself returned with a limp more pronounced than usual and seemed somewhat distracted he informed them there would indeed be something to do tonight. He had heard from a friend, Gaverin Fisher, that some factors had live cargo stored in one of his units toward the end of this section of the dock front and it had broken free, that the place had been secured but with an unusually large presence of the guard around that evening, a more discreet removal was preferable, as Gaverin had put it "Get them gone". As a favour to Gaverin, Landers had proposed to send his people down to deal with it.
The group made haste to head out, with Menolim and Wesley taking to the roofs and Dahr and Melantha along the dock front. They made excellent time as the streets seemed all but deserted as Dahr lead the way there. They came to the warehouse barred and locked. With a keep eye Wesley located a small thieves mark and way to pry part of the roof to slide out gained entrance to the pitch black inside only to be greeting to a skittering sound coming from the far corner. With use of Message a plan was made quickly to light some lamps from afar with Melantha and Menolim in the rafters and Wesley to unlock the door Dahr on the ground below.
Upon lighting the lamp they found the source of the skittering to be centipedes, larger than any local variety they measured over a yard in length and as they crawled all over each other and the walls they could make out 6. With the quarry spotted they descended to the upper floor around the edge of the building and gave signal to unlock and enter. A quick couple of shots took down 2 from the walls before they could react and Wesley unlocked the door and slipped in, making to move to the wall opposite the beasts. Greeted immediately by a black shiny eight legged creature making its home in webs under the upper gantry.
Wesley immediately backing up and calling for Dahr made to hide from the spider behind a thin pillar. Dahr quickly entered and took to dispatching the creature as the centipedes seeing Wesley as closest threat set upon him. In a matter of seconds the beasts were dealt with, but not before Dahr and Wesley felt the fangs of the creatures. Wesley fared well against the venom but Dahr felt an icy burn where the fangs had hit him and a stiffness in his arm. The creatures dealt with, Melantha took the time to attempt to attempt to extract any venom for herself, gathering a small batch of each in the process. They were quickly placed back into crates and sealed up and after a quick discussion Dahr readied to carry them back to Landers.
After locking and securing the building they made to return in the same manner as before. With Melantha and Dahr on the dock way they didn't take long to encounter bands of guards making their way back along the path. With some quick thinking and use of Message they made to direct Dahr through the side streets avoiding the guards returning using Menolims vantage point and had Wesley go on ahead to Landers. On the docks Melantha received a warning from the guards to get back indoors, a large gang war had broken out at the other end of the district and that they were concerned about who was about at the moment.
After navigating Dahr through the sweeping guards they all made it back to Landers without attracting attention, to landers pleasure. "We'll do something about those in the morning" he spoke as he rolled his eyes at the crates containing the spider and centipedes. After hiding them away in the back they all headed off for the evening to bed.
A not uncommon evening around here.
